As you read through our guidelines for preparing your manuscript for typesetting, you may have questions on how to apply them, or have specific goals for your manuscript that are not discussed here. If that's the case, call your Managing Editor! We look forward to providing you with the answers and options you need to achieve a successful new edition. Preparing the documents for your bookWord or Rich Text Format Files. Our typesetting process is optimized to work with document files prepared in Microsoft Word. If you are using a word processor other than Word, please save your documents as rich text format files (.rtf) before submitting them to Hayden-McNeil.
A separate document for each chapter. To keep file sizes manageable, we highly recommend that you prepare each chapter of your manuscript as a separate Word document. Frontmatter material such as a Table of Contents, Acknowledgments, Preface, Forward, or Dedication page, can be lumped together into a single document. Please name files with an indication of the chapter or lab number and its subject. Eg. "Lab 5 Stoichiometry.doc." Writing and formatting your document
Using materials you have not authoredGetting permission takes time. If you select materials for your book (text or images) which you have not authored, permission to use them is required before going to press. The permission process can be lengthy, so we recommend that you discuss all possible permissions requests with your Managing Editor early in the production process. For all approved permissions, we will cite the source in the citation format provided by the permission grantor. Handling your permissions in this way will avoid critical delays at press time.
Hayden-McNeil's illustration and photo libraryChoosing images from our Image Database. Hayden-McNeil has an extensive library of illustrations and photos that are catalogued in our Image Database. You can access the convenient online search tool from your Hayden-McNeil author site. When you find an image that you would like to use, you can save it to a folder in "My Collections" If you decide to communicate your image choices to HMP via a Collection, please be sure to label the folder and each image within the folder with a chapter number, figure number, and/or another unique description so that we can be sure to place it in the right section of your book. For more information on how to use the Image Database, check out our search tips and our image database tutorial.
Custom illustrations. Although we have tens of thousands of images stored in our image database, there are gaps in certain subject areas. If you can't find what you are looking for in our image database, we can arrange for our scientific illustrators to render custom illustrations based on your drawings or references. If it is possible, please send your illustration requests prior to sending your manuscript so our illustrators can get a jump-start on preparing your images. Our illustrators are also able to modify any illustration in the Image Database. If you would like us to change an existing illustration, just print it from the Image Database, mark your changes on the print out, and send it with your manuscript. Author-provided imagesImage resolution should be 300 dpi. Your imagery may include photos, illustrations, graphs, screen captures, or other graphics. If you are providing your own photos, we recommend that the resolution be 300 dpi at their final size in order to look good in print. Lower resolution images can be acceptable if they are very large. Images from the internet are usually of too poor resolution to look good in print, and usually are copyrighted. If you have any questions about whether your photos will print well in your book, we're happy to assist! We can scan your materials. We are also capable of scanning your maps, photos, slides, graphs or other documents for use in your book.
Label your files. Be sure to name your image files with the chapter number and figure number, and/or a unique description that corresponds to its placement in the text. Checklist for submitting your completed manuscriptWhen submitting your manuscript, make sure that you have included the following:
