Hayden-McNeil Donates to Scholarship America
01.05.09: In our continuing support of higher education, Hayden-McNeil has selected to make a donation, on behalf of our authors, to Scholarship America's American Dream Challenge. This fund provides financial support through renewable scholarships to students from poorly-served populations and low-income families. It also offers emotional support to these under-served students—not only to help them complete their chosen programs but also to enter the labor market ready to perform. An unCONVENTIONal NCA
12.01.08: Hayden-McNeil recently exhibited at the annual NCA (National Communication Association) convention from 11/21–11/24 in San Diego, CA. This convention provided Hayden-McNeil with the opportunity to not only network with communications administrators and instructors but also to showcase how our custom publishing services can advance their pedagogy. A perfect fit for this year’s “unconventional” theme which promoted innovation, creativity, and imagination in program planning.
The NCA is the nation’s largest society dedicated to the study and teaching of communication. The annual convention, which hosted more than 5,000 attendees and presenters, offered more than 1,200 educational sessions over the course of four days. To learn more about the NCA, click here.
Hayden-McNeil Supports Chemistry Education
08.01.08: As a platinum sponsor of the 2008 Biennial Conference on Chemical Education (BCCE), Hayden-McNeil was pleased to donate the design and printing of the program books and pocket guides. Our support of the conference has continued to grow over the years. No surprise considering that 34% of the titles we publish are in chemistry
Conferences such as the BCCE provide instructors from around the globe with an opportunity to interact, network and share information. To further support that effort, we hosted our own Focus Group in connection with our publishing partners W.H. Freeman. The group came together to discuss the shaping of on-line lab tools and resources, a topic at the forefront of chemical education as instructors wrestle with ever-growing class sizes and the best way to deliver laboratory education.

Of course, we also made time for some fun. Hayden-McNeil hosted our 2nd Lab Coordinator Luncheon. The luncheon, which is quickly becoming a tradition for our chemistry authors, brings together Hayden-McNeil authors from schools around the country to socialize and network in a relaxed, festive setting.
And we must recognize the BCCE performance by Al D. Hyde and the Keytones featuring our own director of new business development, Mark Kesson. They rocked the house!

Patrick Olson Returns from Myanmar
06.02.08: Patrick Olson is home after spending nearly a week as part of a team delivering supplies to victims in Myanmar following the cyclone that devastated the region. Olson and the team from ShelterBox, a disaster relief organization supported by Rotary clubs throughout the world, provided ShelterBox containers holding tents, blankets, multi-fueled stoves, water purification kits, tools, and other survival items. Olson said it took a team of 200 volunteers about three hours to unload 55 tons of supplies and then reload them into semi-trucks waiting to deliver the much needed equipment to victims of the cyclone. Olson also spent much of his time training personnel (fire and rescue, doctors, volunteers, etc.) in Myanmar on the use of the ShelterBox equipment. Despite the constant presence of the authorities, Olson felt his team accomplished their mission to aid in the relief and was proud to be part of such a critical operation.

Patrick Olson Aiding Relief Efforts in Myanmar
05.19.08: Hayden-McNeil's founder, Patrick Olson, is one of a four-person response team from ShelterBox, a grassroots disaster relief organization supported by Rotary clubs throughout the world, aiding efforts in cyclone-ravaged Myanmar. Patrick and his team will deliver 1,000 ShelterBox containers providing tents, blankets, multi-fueled stoves, water purification kits, tools, and other survival items to some of the one million plus left homeless. Each container is designed to sustain a family of 10 for about six months. Patrick's team will also support volunteers from England who have already been working in Myanmar, delivering the initial shipment of 644 containers. It is expected that Patrick will remain in Myanmar for at least two weeks.

Hayden-McNeil and Dr. Anne Padias Debut Making the Connections, a New Organic Chemistry Techniques Guide
02.01.07: Hayden-McNeil is proud to introduce a brand-new product, Making the Connections: A How-To Guide for Organic Chemistry Lab Techniques, by long-time author, Dr. Anne B. Padías at the University of Arizona. Feeling that most techniques books on the market today are overpriced and simply too verbose, Dr. Padías was compelled to develop an affordable and more practical alternative.
"I focused on writing a book that was very straightforward and succinct," says Dr. Padías. "The aim was to start from the platform of the student's knowledge base, such as everyday life applications and analogies, and build on that knowledge."
Priced at $25 net and written in a clear, concise style, Making the Connections is a user-friendly guide filled with everyday examples of the chemical principles used in the laboratory, practical tips, coverage of modern instrumentation techniques on various scales, an abundance of instructional illustrations, and a convenient soft-cover 6 x 9 format.
"The title of the book refers to the making of bonds to build the molecules that are an essential part of organic chemistry," says Dr. Padías, "but it also refers to the educational aim of helping students "make the connections" with the things they already know and understand."
Making the Connections can be augmented with Dr. Padías' companion laboratory manual as well as Hayden-McNeil's carbonless chemistry lab notebooks.
