Summary Description

The Managing Editor represents HMP to our authors, and principally defines their experience as our client/customer.  The ME's primary mission is to produce and deliver the highest quality product and exceptional customer service to our authors, in a manner that provides an acceptable return for our efforts.

Duties and Responsibilities

* Develops and manages author relationship; acting as primary contact for project design, production, cost analysis and customer service.  Concurrently, executes appropriate strategy for each project.    
* Manages numerous author projects by coordinating production activities including design, costing, printing, binding and shipping; and overall scheduling of in-house and outside resources.
* Identifies author/project concerns and works to achieve appropriate resolutions.  
* Evaluates production process and incorporates changes as necessary; identifies inefficiencies and offers solutions to improve both internal and external production resources.   
* Serves as the team’s liaison with another area of Hayden-McNeil.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

* Well-developed organizational skills and attention to detail.
* Ability to communicate effectively, including excellent interpersonal and negotiation skills.    
* Strong customer service ethic.
* Responsible for taking the initiative and working independently.
* Ability to apply professional/diplomatic skills in high-stress situations.
* Understanding of production concepts: typesetting, illustration, prepress preparation, printing, binding and shipping.
* Ability to apply critical and analytical thinking to projects.
* Builds successful relationship management strategies throughout production process resulting in attainment of targeted team goals.
* Strong database skills; i.e., Microsoft Navision, Access, or comparable program.

Qualifications

* Bachelor’s degree in liberal arts or business preferred, but not required.
* Experience in publishing, college textbook sales or customer service helpful.  

Performance Criteria

* Successfully manage an assigned number of projects each season.
o Author satisfaction as measured by input from authors, project retention rate, etc.
o All projects completed and shipped by school start date.
* Identification of continuous improvement ideas—new technologies, vendor improvements, process improvements, etc.
* Creation of new project opportunities (i.e., leads/referrals to sales reps).
* Completion of special projects (i.e. marketing).   
* Achievement of increased annual goals for portfolio profitability.
* Meet deadline goals involving delivery of manuscripts and author approvals to positively impact production schedules.

Our company is composed of the following teams:

Administrative Team Members of the Administrative Team hold a variety of responsibilities including accounting, human resources, and office management.

Marketing Team Our marketing team is involved with creating and executing marketing campaigns for Hayden-McNeil Specialty Products and charting their progress.

Editorial Team The Editorial Team is the face of Hayden-McNeil for our authors, and as such, must utilize expert customer service and project management skills. Organization and timeliness are key. Please note that no copyediting or manuscript development is involved with these positions.

Production Team Our Production Team is knowledgeable about offset printing and binding, and are involved with ensuring quality of product, monitoring outsourced production, and pay close attention to scheduling.

Design Team Members of this team are involved with typesetting, proofreading, preparing book covers and scientific illustration. Organization and adherence to production schedules are essential to these roles.

Sales and Acquisitions Team Our sales force is in contact with educators on campuses throughout the country, in order to promote our services and acquire new publishing opportunities.

Information Technology Team Hayden-McNeil is a mixed platform workplace with both Macs and PCs. Our IT team provides fast and friendly support for all our computing needs.

Customer Service, Shipping and Receiving Team Members of this team are responsible for customer service, our warehouse, inventory management, order fulfillment and vital production support.

Seasonal Positions Our business requires additional staff during summer and winter production. We utilize proofreaders, typesetters, shipping support, and administrative support during that time frame.
